The Municipality of South Huron is reminding residents to be “bear wise” after black bear activity was reported over the weekend in the Hay Swamp area.
People outdoors are being reminded to stay alert, travel in groups when possible, and avoid wearing headphones so they can hear their surroundings. Residents are also encouraged to watch for signs of bear activity such as tracks, claw marks on trees, or overturned rocks.
Officials say keeping a clean area is key. Strong smells from garbage, food, pet food, and even toiletries can attract bears. Residents are advised to store garbage securely, avoid leaving food outside, and clean barbecues after each use.
At cottages and campsites, people should store all food and scented items indoors or in sealed, bear-resistant containers. Food should never be left in tents, and garbage should be disposed of regularly.
If travelling in backcountry areas, food should be hung at least four metres off the ground or stored in bear-proof containers to prevent access.
Residents are also reminded not to feed wildlife and to work together as a community to prevent bears from becoming comfortable around homes and neighbourhoods.
Anyone who spots a bear in a dangerous situation is encouraged to contact local authorities or the Ministry of Natural Resources for assistance.
