The annual Hike for Huntington’s is returning to Exeter this weekend, bringing the community together to raise awareness and support for families affected by Huntington’s disease.
Local hike coordinator Jaclyn Skinner says the Exeter walk has been taking place for more than 20 years and continues to be an important event for many families in the area.
Skinner says Huntington’s disease has deeply affected her own family. Her grandmother was diagnosed before Skinner was old enough to remember her, and her mother is currently living with the disease in long-term care. Skinner herself also tested positive for Huntington’s disease at the age of 25.
Currently, there is no cure for Huntington’s disease.
Participants can choose from three trail distances, including an accessible option. Families, friends, and pets are all welcome to attend.
Following the walk, a barbecue will be held with free turkey sausages provided by Hayter’s Turkey Farm for participants.
People can register online ahead of time or sign up the morning of the event. Donations made through the Huntington Society of Canada until the end of June will also be matched dollar for dollar.
Skinner says the event is about more than fundraising. She says it is also a chance to build community, support one another, and raise awareness about Huntington’s disease.
The hike will take place on Sunday, May 24th at McNaughton Park in Exeter. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with the walk starting at 10:30 a.m.
