The Avon Maitland District School Board is speaking out after several schools were targeted by vandals over the weekend.
In a statement, the school board said multiple flagpoles displaying both Canadian and Pride flags were deliberately cut down at several school properties. Board officials described the incident as a targeted act of vandalism and said the damage goes beyond simple mischief.
The board reaffirmed its support for 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, and families, stating that the incident does not change its commitment to creating safe, welcoming, and inclusive schools. Mental health and well-being supports are available for any students or staff affected by the incident.
AMDSB also noted that damaging flagpoles flying the Canadian flag shows disrespect for the country and the values it represents.
Officials said replacing the damaged flagpoles will come at a significant cost, requiring public funds that would otherwise be used to support student learning and classroom programs.
The investigation is now being led by the Ontario Provincial Police, with assistance from the school board. AMDSB says it is providing video footage to help identify those responsible. Anyone with information about the vandalism is being asked to contact police.
The board says the damaged flagpoles will be replaced and the flags will once again be raised, adding that its commitment to providing safe and inclusive learning environments remains unchanged.
