OPP have wrapped up their week-long “Stop. Look. Live.” campaign, but officers say intersection safety remains a major concern across the region.
The campaign ran from June 15th to 21st and focused on reducing dangerous driving behaviours at intersections through enforcement and public education.
During the campaign, West Region OPP officers laid 354 charges and issued 126 warnings. Many of the offences involved drivers failing to stop at stop signs, running red or amber lights, and failing to yield the right-of-way.
Police say those behaviours continue to be among the leading causes of serious intersection collisions.
Over the course of the campaign, officers responded to 46 intersection-related crashes, including one fatal collision, 15 collisions that resulted in injuries, and 30 property damage collisions.
OPP says these numbers highlight the risks drivers face when they fail to pay attention or rush through intersections.
Police are reminding motorists to come to a complete stop at stop signs, obey traffic signals, yield when required, and stay alert behind the wheel.
OPP says road safety is everyone’s responsibility and that taking an extra moment to stop, look, and make sure it is safe to proceed can help prevent serious collisions and save lives.
