Residents in South Huron will have to find another place to recycle their old tires for now, as the Municipality has temporarily suspended its tire recycling program at the South Huron Landfill.
Municipal officials say the program has been paused because the landfill has reached its storage capacity for used tires and there are currently no tire haulers available to pick them up.
The Municipality says the issue is part of a growing province-wide backlog that began after changes to Ontario’s tire recycling regulations took effect on January 1, 2025. Under the updated rules, the recycling target for tire suppliers was reduced from 85 per cent to 65 per cent.
South Huron says it has been unable to find companies willing to transport the accumulated tires for recycling. Rather than pass additional costs on to local taxpayers, the Municipality has decided to stop accepting used tires until a solution is found or the province addresses the issue.
In the meantime, residents are encouraged to contact the business where they purchased their tires to ask if they can return them there for recycling.
