Environment Canada has issued an orange heat warning and a severe thunderstorm watch for Goderich, Bluewater, and southern Huron County, as dangerous weather conditions continue across the region.
The heat warning remains in effect as a long-lasting heat event continues. Temperatures are expected to reach around 31°C during the day, with overnight lows near 20°C. Officials say the hot and humid air could also lead to poor air quality, with the Air Quality Health Index possibly reaching high-risk levels.
Residents are being urged to take precautions during the heat. Health officials recommend drinking water often, staying in cool or shaded areas, and checking in on seniors, young children, and anyone living alone. People are also reminded to watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, nausea, headache, and extreme fatigue. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate 911 assistance.
At the same time, Environment Canada is warning that conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms later today and into the evening. The storms could bring wind gusts up to 100 km/h, hail up to ping pong ball size, and heavy rain amounts of more than 30 millimetres in some areas.
Officials say thunderstorms may develop quickly and could lead to power outages, property damage, and dangerous conditions outdoors. Residents are reminded to go indoors when thunder roars, as lightning can be extremely dangerous.
Emergency officials are encouraging everyone to stay alert, follow weather updates, and take all warnings seriously as conditions continue to change.
