As more people head to the water this summer, Huron Area Search and Rescue (HASAR) is reminding residents to make safety a priority.
HASAR volunteer Patrick Armstrong says the organization is a volunteer search and rescue team that helps both on land and on the water. The group works alongside the Canadian Coast Guard when extra help is needed during emergencies.
When spending time around the water, Armstrong says safety should be top of mind.
He notes that if water conditions are not safe, do not chance going out.
HASAR volunteers train every month in ground search, rope rescue, and marine rescue so they are ready to respond when needed. The team relies on regular practice to prepare for emergency situations.
The organization is also looking for new volunteers and welcomes donations to help purchase and replace rescue equipment. Armstrong says applications for the next volunteer intake will open in December.
Above all, he encourages everyone to wear a properly fitted life jacket while boating and enjoy a safe summer on the water.
