Residents in Exeter, Goderich, Bluewater, and southern Huron County are being urged to take extra precautions as the yellow heat warning continues and an orange air quality warning has been issued.
Environment Canada says smoke from forest fires in northwestern Ontario is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility across much of southern Ontario. The smoky conditions could continue into Thursday.
At the same time, daytime temperatures are expected to reach between 30 and 36 degrees, with humidex values between 38 and 42. Overnight temperatures will stay between 20 and 25 degrees, providing little relief from the heat.
Officials are encouraging people to limit time outdoors, especially those who are more at risk, including older adults, young children, pregnant people, those with health conditions, and outdoor workers.
People may experience eye, nose, or throat irritation, headaches, or coughing because of the smoke. Anyone experiencing serious symptoms such as chest pain, wheezing, or severe coughing should seek medical attention right away.
Residents are encouraged to stay cool by drinking plenty of water, spending time in air-conditioned buildings, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. When indoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible to reduce smoke entering your home, while also taking steps to stay cool.
