As Drowning Prevention Week comes to an end, the Lambton County OPP is reminding everyone that water safety is important all summer long.
Provincial Constable Tyler Campbell says drowning can happen quickly and quietly, but many tragedies can be prevented with simple safety steps.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to keep children within arm’s reach around the water and avoid distractions like phones or long conversations. The OPP also reminds boaters, paddlers and anglers to always wear a properly fitted, Transport Canada-approved life jacket or personal flotation device.
The OPP is also reminding people never to mix alcohol or drugs with water activities, as they can affect judgment and reaction time. Swimmers should stick to designated swimming areas whenever possible, watch for changing weather and water conditions, and never dive into unfamiliar water.

OPP says small choices, like wearing a life jacket, watching children closely, staying sober and planning ahead, can help prevent a tragedy and keep everyone safe on the water this summer.
