Some changes could be coming to campsites at Pinery Provincial Park as the Ontario government looks at ways to protect sensitive areas of the park.
The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has released a proposed update to the park’s management plan. The plan looks at changes that could take place over the next 10 years.
91 campsites have already been lost, and another 200 could eventually be removed as the province works to restore parts of the park.
Pinery Provincial Park covers more than 2,500 hectares along Lake Huron in Lambton Shores. It is home to rare plants and wildlife, as well as one of the largest remaining coastal dune systems on the Great Lakes.
The proposed plan includes changes to campgrounds, including work to restore the Burley Campground area. The plan could allow new campsites in some areas that have already been disturbed. At the same time, campsites or campground buildings could be closed if they are found to be harming the park’s natural environment.
Other proposed changes include upgrades to the trailer sanitation station, water management improvements and work around the Old Ausable Channel.
The province says the goal is to protect the park’s natural environment while allowing people to continue enjoying it.
The public can provide feedback on the proposed changes. The ministry says this is the only opportunity for the public to comment before the plan is finalized.
