With a new school year getting underway, the Lambton County OPP is reminding drivers, parents and students to put safety first.
Drivers are being asked to slow down and stay alert in school zones, especially for children walking or biking to and from school.
Police are also reminding drivers to watch for school buses. When a bus has its amber lights flashing, drivers should slow down and prepare to stop. Drivers must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop arm is out.
Passing a stopped school bus is both dangerous and illegal. Drivers who break the law could face fines ranging from $400 to $2,000 and receive six demerit points.
Parents are encouraged to remind children about basic safety rules, including paying attention while walking, looking both ways before crossing the street and using crosswalks and crossing guards.
Students riding bikes to school should wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road. Children taking the bus should stay seated while it is moving and wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before getting on or off.
Lambton County OPP says officers will be increasing patrols in school zones and along bus routes as students head back to class.
Police are asking everyone to be patient and do their part to help make the new school year a safe one for students, families and the entire community.
