South Huron is now inspecting sanitary sewers to look for connections that may be allowing rainwater or groundwater into the sewer system.
The testing will help the municipality find problems that can send extra water to the sewage treatment facility. This can increase costs and reduce the amount of capacity available in the system.
Contractor Flowmetrix will use a method called fog testing. The work is now on going and is expected to be completed by October 30th. The testing should take about four weeks, but could take longer if there are weather delays.
The fog is non-toxic, odourless and does not stain. It is considered safe for people, pets, plants and property.
Residents should pour water into basement floor drains and any unused sinks, showers or other plumbing fixtures a few days before testing begins. This helps make sure the plumbing traps are filled with water.
Residents do not need to be home during the testing. If fog enters your home, you can contact Flowmetrix, and a site superintendent may visit to get more information.
Flowmetrix workers may also be seen near properties while they check sewer vents and surrounding areas. They will not enter gated areas or backyards.
A drone may also be used to check roof vents, downspouts and eavestroughs. The municipality says the drone will only be used for the sewer inspection and all work will follow safety and Transport Canada rules.
Residents with health concerns that could be affected by the testing are asked to contact the project team before the work begins.
