The Walk for Parkinson’s event is returning to Grand Bend this Sunday, with organizers planning a fun day to raise awareness and support for people living with Parkinson’s disease. Registration kicks off at 1pm and the walk starts at 2pm.
Volunteer organizer Bill Norris says there has been some changes to the event this year.
A refreshment station will also be set up along the route, where walkers can grab a drink and a popsicle to cool off.
Norris told myFM how he became involved in the walk.
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disease that can affect movement, mobility and thinking. While there is currently no cure, there are programs and supports available to help people living with the disease.
Norris says raising awareness for Parkinson’s is extremely important.
People can register ahead of time online or sign up when they arrive. Participants do not need to collect pledges to take part. Norris says people can simply come out, walk with others and show their support.
The route will take walkers from the church down Grand Bend’s main street to the pier and back. The walk takes between about 25 minutes and an hour, depending on how quickly people walk.
Organizers will also have a cornhole game set up, with small prizes available for participants. If the weather does not cooperate, the event will stay at the church rather than having people walk in the rain. Once the walk is finished, everyone can head back to the church for pizza and treats.
