As part of 90.5 myFM’s 2026 Election Coverage, myFM reached out to candidates in South Huron, Bluewater, Lambton Shores and Lucan-Biddulph to hear why they believe residents should vote for them on October 26th.
Here’s what Michael DeCorte, running for Bayfield Ward in Bluewater had to say.
TRANSCRIBED AUDIO:
“My name is Mike DeCorte and I’m running for Bluewater Council in the Ward of Bayfield.
Why are you running for a spot on council? When our Bayfield councillor made the decision many months ago to run for Deputy Mayor, I was approached to see if there was interest to fill the position that I’d previously shown an interest in. His wish is that the ward position be filled by a strong individual who stands by their principles but understands the need for collaboration and compromise to ensure the ongoing success of our ward. I was honoured by his nod, which gave me the confidence to move forward and commit.
Being very involved in our community, especially on Main Street, I was always acting as concierge for our village, which gave me a good understanding of the needs, wants and concerns of my neighbours. Having this connection and good understanding of how the municipal council functions, I feel I can offer a good perspective and practical guidance that is needed on all positions of council.
I’ve always held an open mind, looking to see things from all angles, as there’s always more than one side to any story and more than one opinion to consider. I’ve volunteered on many boards and projects. I was president of the Seaforth Cooperative Children’s Centre when we built a new facility, as well as vice and then president of the Bayfield and Area Chamber of Commerce and serving currently with the Bayfield Lions.
Owning my own business, I know that talking is good, but action is always needed to move forward. I have and am always willing to lend a hand to any projects or events.
What is the biggest issue our community is facing right now? That is a very difficult question as it depends on who you ask. Everyone has their hot topic that need addressed right away. In my campaign thus far, major concerns presented to me have been parking, heritage, tourists in Bayfield as well as tree maintenance and housing community growth. Each concern is voiced with a seemingly easy solution.
My job as Councillor will be to triage each concern and work with the municipal staff and council to find the best workable solution. The municipal budget, especially looking forward in the near future, is a major concern. Declining reserves and funding streams, along with rising costs and service requests, we’ll have to do our best to economize on the processes and become more resourceful in finding savings and new revenues. We need to swap the, we’ve always done it that way attitude with how can we do it better?
A vote for me is a vote for a hands-on hard worker with personal integrity. I’ve always enjoyed being the go-to guy for any and all requests from what’s going on at council to do you know a good plumber? And always, can you help with? I take great pride in being able to answer with confidence, consider it done. I will do the research, call out the misinformation, weigh all the options and present as much information as possible to ensure that you know why myself and council came to the decisions that we have.
I honestly will make no promise of any results, but only of my efforts.
Be cautious of any politicians who promise outside of their own control. I thank you for listening and appreciate your vote for Mike DeCorte.”
