TRANSCRIBED AUDIO:
“Hi, my name is Shawn Dickey. I’m the acclaimed Ward 3 Councillor for the municipality of Lambton Shores coming up here in October. I’ve decided to put my name forward because I care deeply about Ward 3 and the future of both Port Franks and Ipperwash. These are unique communities with very strong identities and I believe they deserve a strong voice at the Lambton Shores Council table.
I’ve always believed that strong communities are built by people who are willing to step forward, listen and get involved. I saw this as an opportunity to give back and help ensure that the concerns and priorities of our residents here at Lambton Shores continues to grow and evolve.
While this will be my first experience serving in an elected municipal office, I believe that leadership experience comes from much more than politics. As a general manager of a local run company, I have developed extensive experience working with people, managing responsibilities, solving problems, and making thoughtful decisions. I also have more than 30 years of coaching experience in hockey and some in baseball, which has taught me the importance of communication, teamwork, accountability, and bringing people together toward a common goal. I’ve also had the privilege of being the president of our local Legion, Branch 278, for several years.
These experiences have helped me understand the value of listening to different perspectives, building strong relationships, and working collaboratively to find a practical solution. They have also reinforced my belief that effective leadership is about serving others and helping a team or community move forward. I understand that being a councillor is more about representing people, not simply representing my own opinions.
I look forward to learning from the experience of members of council, working with municipal staff, and most importantly, listening to our residents of Ward 3.
One of the biggest challenges facing our communities is managing growth and change while protecting that what makes Port Franks and Ipperwash special. Residents want to see their communities thrive, but they also want to ensure that development, infrastructure, and environmental concerns and municipal services are managed responsibly. It is important that growth does not come from the expense of the character and quality of life that makes Ward 3 such a desirable place to live and visit. I believe council needs to take a balanced approach, planning for the future while respecting the voices of existing residents and protecting the unique character of our communities.
My approach will be simple. Listen first, be accessible, and speak up for Ward 3. Port Franks and Ipperwash each have their own unique needs and concerns, and I want residents to know they have someone in council who will be approachable and willing to have honest conversations. My experience as a general manager and coach has taught me the importance of being present, communicating clearly, and following through on commitments.
I plan to stay connected with the residents, local organizations, businesses and community groups so I can better understand what matters most to people I represent. I will come to council prepared, ask questions and make decisions based on what I believe is in the best interest of Ward 3 and Lambton Shores as a whole. Being a claim does not change my responsibilities to earn the trust of the residents. In fact, I see it as even a greater responsibility over the next term. I intend to work hard, remain accessible, and be a strong and respectful voice for Port Franks and Ipperwash. Thanks for your time.”
