Ontario and the federal government have agreed to extend the province’s affordable child-care program for another four years, but Ontario will not reach the program’s $10-a-day average fee goal under the new agreement.
The deal provides nearly $12 billion in federal funding through March 2031, while Ontario has committed to maintaining its current average fee of $19 a day, capped at $22, until June 30, 2027.
What happens to child-care fees after that remains under discussion, with Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra saying significantly more federal funding would be needed if fees are to be lowered further.
