Norfolk County is warning residents about a fake Facebook page impersonating the municipality and sharing false information, including fabricated statements attributed to County officials.
In a notice, the County says the page is using its official logos, graphics, images and content without authorization, potentially misleading residents into believing the information is coming directly from the municipality.
The page has been reported to Meta (Facebook), although it is unclear how long it has been active or how many residents may have seen its posts.
The warning comes just days after Norfolk County addressed another incident involving misinformation circulating on social media.
Earlier this week, an altered version of one of the County’s official waste collection stickers was shared online, appearing to show an offensive message that was not included on the original notice.
The altered sticker featured the words “you moron” following a message advising a resident that it was not their scheduled garbage collection week. The County confirmed the language was not part of the official sticker.
Norfolk County is encouraging residents to verify information they see online or in the media through its official communication channels, rather than relying on unofficial posts or pages.
The municipality thanked residents for helping ensure the community has access to accurate and reliable information.
