Fire Prevention Week is underway, and the South Huron Fire Department is reminding residents that safe charging habits can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires.
Fire Prevention Week runs until October 10th. The theme is “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”
The South Huron Fire Department says lithium-ion batteries are being used more often in everyday devices, and fire services are seeing an increase in fires linked to these batteries.
Residents are being reminded to use the charger and cord that came with their device, or one approved by the manufacturer. Cheap or off-brand chargers may not meet important safety standards and could damage the battery.
Devices should also be charged on a hard, flat surface, such as a table or desk. Beds, couches and pillows can trap heat and cause a battery to overheat.
People should stop using a device if it becomes very hot, starts to swell, smells unusual, leaks, smokes or makes popping or hissing sounds.
Once a device is fully charged, unplug it. Leaving it plugged in can create extra heat and put stress on the battery.
Larger batteries, including those used in e-bikes, scooters and power tools, should be charged outside when possible. They should also never block an exit.
When buying devices or batteries, residents are encouraged to look for products tested by a recognized safety organization, such as UL, ETL or CSA.
The South Huron Fire Department says these simple steps can help reduce the risk of a battery fire in the home or workplace.
Working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan are also important parts of fire safety.
