Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady is urging voters to look beyond campaign promises and consider candidates’ records, priorities and behaviour ahead of the October 26 municipal election.
In a column published October 14, Brady reflected on conversations with residents at the Caledonia and Norfolk County fairs, where she said two questions came up repeatedly: whom to vote for and how to stop a proposed city of 40,000 people at Nanticoke.
Brady said voters should examine candidates’ track records, how they respond under pressure and the people advising their campaigns.
She also raised concerns about toxic online behaviour, saying harassment can discourage good people from entering or remaining in public life.
The proposed Nanticoke development remains a key concern for Brady, who said the province has not yet made a final decision on the proposal.
She argued that the effects of a development of that scale would extend beyond Haldimand County, potentially putting additional pressure on roads, health care and other public services in neighbouring Norfolk.
Brady criticized Norfolk County Council for not taking a clear position on the proposal and called on the next council to ensure Norfolk’s concerns are heard by Haldimand County and the provincial government.
She encouraged residents to make informed choices at the ballot box and urged elected officials to speak up on issues that could significantly affect their communities.
