With Halloween approaching, Ontario Provincial Police are reminding families and motorists to take a few extra precautions to keep trick-or-treating safe.
The OPP has released a series of safety recommendations aimed at children, parents and drivers, with a particular focus on visibility, pedestrian safety and avoiding preventable accidents.
Constable Craig Soldan says for those going alone for the first time, they should always have a plan before leaving the house.
For trick-or-treaters, Soldan says you should make sure your costume is bright and have reflective pieces.
Police are also encouraging children to walk rather than run, use sidewalks whenever possible and avoid repeatedly crossing back and forth across streets.
Soldan adds parents should also ensure older children have a charged cellphone and only visit well-lit homes where residents are participating in Halloween activities.
Drivers are being reminded to slow down in residential neighbourhoods and remain especially alert during the early evening, when children may unexpectedly step onto the roadway.
Police say a little preparation and extra attention can help make Halloween safer for everyone.
