Huron County OPP are warning people about another scam. This one resulted in a senior in Central Huron losing out on $8,000 after she was told to purchase Google Play gift cards.
The senior received a phone call from someone who claimed to be from her bank informing her that someone hacked into her account and stole $600 from her account.
The senior was told that the bank was working with a wire transfer service to help get the money back.
The next day, the scammer called the senior and mentioned that the money was returned with additional one thousand dollars. The senior was then informed that they need to pay back the wire transfer company in the form of Google Play cards.
The victim did so but then a few days was called again to purchase more cards and that was when the person notified the bank.
Investigators revealed that the scammers were able to gain access to the victim’s bank account and made the call sound legit.
They advise never to share the code on the back of the gift card as once the scammer has the code, they can begin making purchases. If you suspect a fraudulent call, hang up and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
