Falling asleep while driving is a serious concern on the roadway, as about 20 percent of fatal collisions in Canada are due to driver fatigue. On August 6th, first responders in Perth East were called to Perth Line 72 between Road 124 and Road 129 west of Millbank for a single-vehicle crash.
Investigators say that a minivan left the roadway and struck a hydro pole.
The female driver and four passengers were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver a 47-year-old from Millbank is facing charges of careless driving.
Tips to stay safe and alert while driving include:
1) sleeping well
2) share driving with other passengers
3) take frequent breaks
4) keep the inside of a vehicle on the cooler side as a warmer vehicle can make you sleepy
5) eat light meals and drink plenty of water, as overeating can make you tired.
