The Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre has come to set the record straight after being accused of fund mismanagement in a letter to the editor of a local paper.
Executive Director, Mary Ellen Zielman, spoke at the County Council meeting yesterday (Wednesday) about the issue, saying they plan to work on communication between volunteers in the future, as that is where the misinformation started.
County Councillor and mayor of Huron East, Bernie MacLellan, was the one to bring up the matter to council after hearing concerns in his municipality.
Zielman stated to council that while it’s true the food banks do provide some payment, a small fee goes towards vehicle operating costs. They also can provide money for their milk and eggs reserve, a program made after the food banks expressed a growing need for the products.
She says they still deliver these items even if the food banks don’t provide the funding, and food banks have never been required to pay.
She says the distribution centre is not a threat to local food banks, as they only exist to support them.
