The Ontario government is reminding people to get their free flu shot to protect themselves from getting the flu and possibly spreading it to others.
As the weather gets colder, they remind the public hat the flu shot provides the best defence, and can help alleviate pressure on hospitals and the health care system.
They point out that the free flu shot is even more important for younger children, pregnant women and people 65 years and older who are at high risk of flu-related complications.
According to the Ontario Medical Association, the flu is common, but can be quite serious, they say it kills an estimated 3,500 Canadians every year and puts more than 12,000 in the hospital.
Family doctor and nurse practitioner offices, participating pharmacies and public health units will have flu shots available for anyone five years of age and up.
For children between the ages of six months and four years, they can have the shot be administered by a doctor or nurse practitioner.
