myFM has an update to a story we brought you late last night and early this morning. The provinces Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances around the shooting death of a 44 year old man in Exeter last night. The SIU has released a few details to myFM.
At around 6:30 PM the OPP and the South Huron Fire Department were called to a residence on Simcoe Street for a fire call.
While first responders were outside a man exited the residence armed with an axe, and an interaction between him and police took place. Because of the interaction the SIU says that multiple officers discharged their firearms and the man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The man has been identified as 44 year old Wade Vanderwal.
The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency which investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
The Investigation is ongoing and the Special Investigations Unit is urging anyone with any information to call them at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence to upload that video through the SIU website.
