A recent rental scam attempt serves as a timely reminder for those currently searching for accommodations.
With limited affordable housing options available, OPP say scammers are taking advantage and are trying to exploit the current market conditions.
Recently, a resident of Grand Bend dodged a rental scam when she was asked to send in a $2,000 deposit for a new place she was trying to secure in Clinton.
She initially responded to an online listing of a property that was available for rent then the scammer contacted her asking for a deposit in order to get the keys to the place.
In this particular case, the scammer stated they were now living in the states and were unable to meet in person. Also, they would only respond via text and they sounded very desperate for any amount of cash to secure the property.
Huron County OPP officers would like to remind all residents to be vigilant at all times when responding to ads on various web sites.
In general, always remember, “If a deal sounds too good to be true, it likely is”.
