Baseball, soccer, hockey, and ringette are all sports Todd Russett has coached in the area over the years, mostly in and around Grand Bend.
He got into coaching hockey when his son was playing Tyke and the league needed volunteers, and the same story goes with his daughters in ringette.
He saw success getting into coaching in his first year as seeing the same kids continue on with the same sport the following year and stick with it, something he says has mostly been the case.
Russett had always loved sports growing up so hopping into a coach or a trainer role to him was a no-brainer. He hoped when he got into coaching he’d be able to provide an impact on the kids lives the way his coaches growing up did.
He says sports teach good values like respect and sportsmanship, and behind behind the bench or on the field is a way to help pass those life lessons along for his own children and the rest of the teams as well.
Keeping and understanding kids interests differ is something Russett knows to deal with when around the younger age groups, no matter the sport. Having fun is the goal.
He says if you want to get involved, just go out and do it. You don’t have to be a head coach, you can help in a number of different ways and it’s always welcomed.
