The Street2feet team along with the United Way and community organization leaders spoke to a good audience at the Exeter United Church on Monday night. Street2feet member Heather MacKechnie says Monday’s forum helped people realize the support systems available.
MacKechnie says combating homelessness is all about treating people like people and not statistics. Over 100 people are currently homeless locally, but 80 percent of homelessness is hidden.
United Way Executive Director Ryan Erb says shelters cost much more than providing subsidy for rental homes.
Erb says subsidy is also cheaper than hospital visits, and prison which some homeless people have turned to just to ensure meals and a roof over their heads.
