In light of the tragedy in Nova Scotia, the OPP is providing tips for everyone about to try and help ease some concerns about getting pulled over by police.
The OPP says the safety of everyone is paramount, so if you suspect you are being pulled over by someone who’s impersonating a police officer, immediately call 9-1-1.
Other tips include not getting out of the vehicle and trying to get a licence plate.
If you are pulled over in an isolated area by an unmarked vehicle it is recommended that you slow down, and drive in a safe manner to the nearest well-lit populated area.
If that’s not possible, lock all doors, and pull over but leave the vehicle running.
Call 9-1-1 and provide the dispatcher with your location, also ask the dispatcher if they have had any communication with an officer about a stop in the area you are in.
Citizens are able to ask for an officers badge and warrant card, and off-duty officers may not be wearing a uniform but they should be able to provide you with proper information, but if you are still not satisfied ask for an uniformed officer.
The OPP says police impersonation is not common but is a very serious offence.
