Signs of an economic recovery in some economic sectors of the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region may be evident based on increased employment in the service sector over the last few months.
That’s the optimistic outlook from Gemma Mendez-Smith, Executive Director of the Four County Labour Market Planning Board.
Latest figures show the unemployment rate for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region increased to 6.3%, while the provincial unemployment rate increased to 9%.
Overall net employment in the region decreased by 3,800, with 4,900 full time job losses in January, the greatest loss since the pandemic began.
Mendez-Smith adds, the local unemployment rate, both for December and for 2020 overall, continues to be the lowest rate in the province.
