The Provincial government is investing $1 million to expand on-the-job training for 350 young people in film, music, gaming, animation, and other creative industries. The initiative is focused on youth over the age of 16 who are new to Canada, indigenous, black or have a disability.
The hope of the initiative is to help youth who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic to connect to career, and help strengthen the economy.
The programs will run for eight to 12 weeks, where they will learn from top level industry talent, and help research and collaborate on projects. Once the training is done the participant will be prepared for a career in the creative industry.
Monte McNaughton, Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development said “The creative industries offer many exciting and well-paying opportunities for young people looking to start an in-demand career.”
This funding is part of the governments $115-million Skills Development Fund, which addresses the challenges to hiring, training, and retraining workers due to the pandemic.
