The Town of St. Marys is commemorating the first ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation today (Sept 30).
Education, respect and moving forward in solidarity are the keys to the day which will begin at 7:30 AM with the lighting of a sacred fire at the north end of Milt Dunnell Field.
The fire will be on until 5 PM and everyone is asked to grab some provided tobacco, and reflect as they sprinkle it into the fire.
Everyone can also use provided paint and add an orange handprint to a drop cloth, a sign of solidarity.
The day will also feature local and handmade Indigenous crafts available by donation, a reading at 4 PM by Indigenous author S.P. Joseph Lyons of his children’s book Little Bear in Foster Care, and so much more.
The Town will also raise special orange flags with the words Every Child Matters, and the flags were designed by Jeffrey Red George an Ojibway artist from Kettle and Stoney Point First Nation.
