After much discussion in council on Monday night, the Municipality of South Huron has decided not to terminate their contract with the Ontario Provincial Police.
The motion was lost 5-2, with Councillor Aaron Neeb and Mayor George Finch being the sole two to vote in favor of ending the contract.
Right now the Municipality has a Section 10, contract with the OPP, which means that they have a Police Service Board, which broken down means that council, the board, and the OPP work together on objectives, as well as they get reports from the OPP among other things. If they had voted to end the contract, the OPP would still police in the area, moving to be in Section 5.1, which is non-contract where Council would have to work with the OPP Detachment Commander for information and updates, and the OPP would have no responsibility regarding municipal by-laws.
The Ontario government is planning on moving forward in 2022 with a more regional approach to Police Service Boards, which would make it Huron-County Wide, which is one of the reasons this motion was brought forward.
