The horse in Perth-South that had a positive rabies result a few weeks ago has been reclassified as negative after more tests were run.
The initial test done strongly suggested a low-level positive result, and due to the fatal nature of the rabies virus, and since there was human exposure, a positive result was issued.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency conducted more tests to find out what strain of rabies it was, and this is when the virus was not detected and they determined it was a false positive.
According to the CFIA this is only the second sample out of approximately 32,000 samples in the past 10 years that has been reported as a false positive.
The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has been in contact with the farm owner about the ongoing management of the other animals who were exposed to the horse, following the reclassification.
