As the Ausable Bayfield Conservation continues to celebrate their 75th anniversary, another municipality is under the spotlight; The Municipality of West Perth.
West Perth is filled with small creeks, which lead into the Ausable River and reach Lake Huron at Port Frank or the Bayfield River at Bayfield. The landowners of these areas work hard to conserve the waters, and the area surrounding it. There are tall, long rows of Spruce and Cedar trees that were purchased from the ABCA Reforestation Assistance Program, and the landowners as well as the ABCA planted them.
The landowners have been planting three windbreaks to prevent the wind from eroding valuable topsoil for decades, and many of these windbreaks stretch the entire length of a farm, and can be over fifty feet tall. There are many benefits to the windbreaks; lower winds mean the soil lays on the field, they provide a habitat for birds, and they shade the water keeping it cool for the wildlife that live in it are among some of the many benefits.
The landowners in the Ausable Bayfield have been dedicated to the conservation for many years, which is why they are under the spotlight.
