Labour Minister Monte McNaughton says an expert panel will begin work on a new “portable benefits” system for workers without health, dental or vision coverage.
The system is intended to cover workers in the gig economy, retail and hospitality jobs and provide them with benefits that would follow them as they change careers.
McNaughton says it’s aimed at rebalancing the scales but an interim report on how the system might work is not expected until July — after the next provincial election.
Workers and advocates have raised concerns about the lack of details and say the province should instead focus on ensuring gig workers have basic employment standards like minimum wage
