Try not to burn down anything this camping season.
Alistair MacKenzie, Supervisor of the Discovery and Resource Management based out of the Pinery Provincial Park in Grand Bend wants to remind campers to brush up on their campfire safety
It’s important to also keep a bucket of water nearby as you just never know. It’s also smart to research the area you are going to and be informed of any alerts in the area.
An easy tool to search any parks in Ontario is to go to www.ontariopaarks.com. They have a full list of parks, what they offer, and safety tips and they post alerts if there is any in your desired camping area.
Here are some campfire tips:
– Chop wood away from children and do not let them handle an ax.
– small fires are safer and easier to control. By law, it shouldn’t be more than a meter high and one meter in diameter.
– Be sure to watch children closely around a campfire and sit at a safe distance away.
– let your child know the fire is hot.
– minimize playing around the fire.
– Watch for flying embers.
– Remind everyone not to swing burning marshmallows around, blowing on fire puts it out quicker and minimizes accidents.
