In January a new guide on Alcohol and Health was released by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction.
It’s based on the latest research which looks at risk factors involving alcohol including injuries, violence, and chronic diseases.
The report says the zero drinks per week minimizes the health risks, anyone who has 1-2 drinks per week is considered low risk, anyone who has 3-6 drinks per week is at moderate risk and adds to your risk level of several types of cancer.
Anyone who has 7 or more drinks per week is considered high risk and will see the risks around heart disease or stroke increase.
Locally, a health survey shows that 26 % of people 19 plus in Huron and Perth Counties are considered in the high-risk category.
The data from the report from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction found that alcohol consumption causes close to 7000 deaths from cancer per year in Canada.
