Another sign of spring can be spotted coming into the Harbour in Goderich.
After taking some time off, the Great Lakes and Ocean Freighters are back in action, signaling the start of the shipping season.
Myles Murdock, the Mayor of Goderich, tells myFM they usually have a ceremony to commemorate the bringers of spring.
The ceremony is named after a Top Hat, much like the one Mr. Peanut wears, that is signed by the first freighter’s crew. At this time, it seems the ceremony will happen tomorrow morning.
It seems the race to the Goderich harbor is between two ships. One from Owen Sound and one from Detroit. One of them will be in port by tonight.
Murdock says the ceremony has been a tradition since 1932.
Goderich welcomes over 250 ships a year. The shipping season is an important one that welcomes more income and servicing. Salt is the biggest material moved in the port.
Murdock says that they have plans to extend the harbor.
You can keep an eye on the Town of Goderich’s Facebook page for updates on the Top Hat Ceremony.
