Bluewater Council had a meeting this past Monday and had a full-hearted deliberation about the Bayfield Village Speed Limit Reduction Investigation.
The Investigation is a pilot project. It was recommended that council advise staff to make Municipal Residential Roads 40km/h in Bayfield, and 30km/h in Urban School zones, parkland areas and on joint jurisdiction boundary roads North of Bayfield River.
Councilor Bill Whetstone says he isn’t in total agreement with the recommendation.
Dave Kester, Manager of Public Words for the Municipality of Bluewater, explained that the recommendation laid out provides consistency along the lake shore and with neighbouring Municipalities.
Councilor Scott Harris made a point that people usually drive over the speed limit. He was in agreement to lower the speed limit in the pilot project to 30km/h on residential roads. Councilor Winona Bailey was in agreement as well saying she drove in Bayfield, by parks, and couldn’t go above 25 to 30km/h due to pedestrians.
Councilor Harris says they should go ahead with the pilot project, and go from there.
In the end, Whetstone made a motion that recommends council to direct staff to take the steps necessary to establish 30km/h speed zone pilot project on residential roads and 30km/h in school zones, municipal parkland areas and implement the project on joint jurisdiction boundary roads north of the Bayfield River. Councilor Peter Walden seconded with no further discussion.
