Over 300 anglers competed in the 47th annual Bluewater Salmon Derby, which finished on Sunday. Although there were a wide variety of fish fresh for the taking, the one that many anglers hung their hopes on was the Chinook Salmon.
While there was once an abundance of Chinook Salmon in Lake Huron, overfishing led to their decline after their main food source became scarce in the early 2000’s. Although they can still be caught, the average weight of a Chinook Salmon is much lower now than it was 30 years ago.
The largest fish caught in the derby this year was an 18.28 pound salmon, caught by Keith Anderson, from Sarnia. Many from Grand Bend also competed, and local Fred Wondergem placed in the top ten.
