As we enter the thick of planting season, Huron OPP want to remind the public about safety when sharing the road with farm equipment.
Craig Soldan – Provincial Constable with Huron OPP Clinton, says that the size, and lower speed of farm machinery definitely poses a potential danger to motorists.
Constable Soldan says that it’s important that every motorist just try not to rush or pass unsafely.
He also issued a reminder to give lots of space behind large equipment, and to pay special attention the signals, as large equipment may need more space for wide turns.
Accidents aren’t limited to motorists, Constable Soldan says that it’s also important that farmers keep themselves safe as well.
To limit accidents on the road way, Constable Soldan recommends that when operating slow moving equipment, try not to hold up traffic unnecessarily – take a couple minutes on the shoulder and let people pass you, as this may reduce aggressive drivers passing unsafely.
He also recommends that operators take breaks, and don’t drive tired, just like driving a car.
