If you’ve ever looked out across the windswept plains of the county, you may have looked right past some field erosion.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority’s series of initiatives to prevent field erosion are a mutually beneficial partnership with farmers, which protects their land, as well as the water table.
Nathan Schoelier Stewardship and Lands Manager with the ABCA says that partnership with farmers is mutually beneficial,
There are a variety of implementations that can help reduce field erosion, but one in particular helps address water quality says Schoelier,
The ABCA can also help farmers gain access to funding to protect their lands through the Huron Clean Water Project, which receives $500,000 in funding from the County of Huron annually, and helps land owners receive technical and financial support for the protection of drinking water.
Initiatives that protect water quality like erosion control, tree planting, and increasing wind breaks can all be financed through this fund – the next intake for applications is in June, with the following intake in September.
Schoelier says that water quality and erosion prevention is something that should be of concern for everyone, not just the farmers that own the lands affected,
