Although we all try to do our part to protect the environment by cutting out plastics and reducing emissions, the clothes you put on your back every day are actually a major polluter.
Christina Masschelein – owner of Sustainable Fashion Boutique Metanoia in Grand Bend, says that sustainable fashion is the key to a greener future.
She says that by prolonging the use of each of our pieces and purchasing locally made, small batch production, sustainable brands, you can get a high quality item with long lifespan.
Shopping local also contributes to sustainable fashion, as shipping is very pollutive says Masschelein
She also says that by purchasing locally, you can try an item on and know if it’s right for you, while ordering online is a roll of the dice, with returns also contributing to textile waste since many big retailers throw away returns as they’re unfit for reselling.
Masschelein says that at the end of the day, the most important thing when it comes to sustainable fashion is education. Most people don’t know the end lifecycle of clothing, and once you think about that, you might change your approach.
