The Municipality of Lambton Shores issued an open air burn restriction yesterday afternoon, following widespread dryness throughout the region.
It has been several weeks since any precipitation has been recorded, with record high temperatures last week exacerbating dry conditions.
Although small recreational campfires are still allowed under the ban, the Municipality urges the public to closely attend the fires, and to have a bucket of water on hand in case it starts to spread.
“These open air burn restrictions will remain in place until further notice and staff will continue to closely monitor conditions throughout the week,” said Acting Fire Chief David McLean. “Should we continue to see high temperatures with no rainfall, a full fire ban may be implemented.”
They also reminded the public that it’s not just fires we need to think about, but small ignitions as well.
“Whether it’s an unattended campfire or someone tossing a lit cigarette into the grass, it doesn’t take much for a fire to start and spread rapidly in these conditions,” continued Acting Chief McLean.
