South Huron Council discussed the June 5th request of Huron County Pride to raise the flag for the month of June at a meeting on Monday (June 19).
Counsellor Aaron Neeb observed the importance of creating an inclusive community for all individuals,
He also pointed out that there were a variety of symbols that were of importance to counsel, including the Canadian flag, national anthem – and that the pride flag carried such a weight with the community it represents.
Mayor George Finch said that fairness, equity, and inclusivity are also values that he agrees are important,
The solution proposed included the installation of an additional flag pole on municipal properties, for the flying of specially designated flags,
Staff will be reviewing the flag policy to help create a more inclusive policy for all community groups, identifying a suitable location for a community flag pole, as well as formalizing the process for applying to have a flag flown on the pole.
