Following the passing of short-term rental legislation in the neighboring Bluewater Municipality, South Huron Council brought the topic to the floor for discussion at their meeting on Monday, June 19th.
Counsellor Neeb observed that it would be important to track the short-term rentals to make sure that they’re compliant with fire code and other safety codes,
There are estimated to only be about 20 short term rental units in the municipality at the present time, however, it’s something that the municipality will be looking into going forward.
Counsellor Vaughan noted that it would be better to be proactive when implementing a by-law that would help administrate such dwellings in the future, and raised some concerns about how existing development projects would be used in the future,
Counsellor Oke noted that upcoming federal legislation will be helpful for tracking the dwellings,
Council agreed to keep an eye on the problem in the future, but no changes are proposed at this time.
