With the summer boating season well underway, local OPP authorities are increasing their presence on the water to ensure safety.
Tragically, over the past five years, OPP-investigated marine incidents have resulted in numerous fatalities, particularly due to the failure of individuals to wear essential safety equipment.
Statistics from 2018 to 2022 paint a concerning picture, revealing the consequences of disregarding safety measures.
During this period, OPP reports that 114 boaters/paddlers perished in marine incidents as a result of not wearing lifejackets.
OPP officials continue to emphasize the critical importance of wearing proper safety gear, such as lifejackets or helmets, as it significantly increases the chances of survival during life-threatening situations.
“The Canada Day long weekend is a great way to kick off the summer with fun activities for the entire family. If you’re heading out, remember to do your part to stay safe when traveling on roads and waterways. Always wear a seatbelt, a lifejacket, or a helmet, where applicable. It’s the law, and it helps save lives,” – Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation.
