As the school year wraps up, lots of parents are already itching for their kids to get back to the classroom in September – and when they do, there’s something new on the agenda: cursive writing is making a comeback as a mandatory subject, says Education Minister Stephen Lecce.
Lecce says that research has shown how important cursive writing is for young people. It helps them express themselves better, think more critically, and be more authentic in their communication.
Ontario’s new language curriculum for the upcoming school year is bringing in a bunch of changes, including a fresh focus on phonics.
These curriculum updates are influenced by a report from the Ontario Human Rights Commission last year. The report pointed out that the province’s public education system wasn’t doing enough for students with reading disabilities and others who could benefit from using proven teaching methods.
