Heavy rainfall in the early hours of this morning has prompted the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) to issue a flood watch for the entire watershed.
The intense downpour overnight saw southern and central parts of the watershed receive between 40 and 60 millimeters of rain, while the northern part experienced higher rainfall amounts, ranging from 75 to 90 millimeters.
The short duration of the intense rainfall, coupled with its high intensity and widespread distribution, has led to the flooding of low-lying floodplain areas, with field ponding becoming common.
As a result, numerous isolated road closures, washouts, and other localized flooding issues may occur.
Flows on the larger rivers are expected to peak tomorrow (Friday, July 14) and Saturday, with water levels remaining higher than normal throughout the weekend. Residents are urged to exercise caution near all watercourses, as the combination of slippery and unstable streambanks, along with fast-flowing water, creates hazardous conditions.

The Parkhill Dam may be operated to attenuate high flows in the lower Parkhill Creek if necessary. This measure aims to mitigate the impact of the increased water levels on surrounding areas.
The flood watch will be in effect until 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2023, unless local conditions warrant further updates. The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority will continue to monitor forecasts and watershed conditions closely over the next few days, providing necessary updates as the situation unfolds.
Residents are advised to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and heed any warnings or instructions issued by local authorities. Taking precautionary measures and staying vigilant during this period of heightened flood risk will ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the region.
